US GOLD
Many of US Gold's earliest titles were already available in the UK, imported by shops like Calisto Computers via Centresoft, US Gold's parent company. Six months after US Gold was formed on 12th March 1984, a 50% stake in the company was sold to Jon Woods and David Ward of Ocean Software.
In late 1985 they took control of the Ultimate Play The Game label for several years, releasing a string of compilations to exploit their back catalogue and a number of disappointing new titles. Often incorrectly reported as having bought the company, they only held a minority stake, which returned to the Stamper brothers in 1988.
US Gold's first budget label was Americana Software with later releases handled by Mastertronic, before the label was relaunched in August 1988 as Kixx. Kixx was administered by Status up until October 1990 when a new logo was unveiled and the label was finally brought in-house.
Their biggest hits include their first release, Beach-Head, and the ports of Gauntlet and Out Run that took the Christmas Number One position for two years running. They also had what is regarded as one of the most notorious number one hits with World Cup Carnival - a slightly modified version of Artic Computing's 1984 hit World Cup Football.
